Same idea, different model
Both apps are built around the same idea: snap a photo instead of searching a database. Cal AI's website offers to snap a photo, scan a barcode, or describe your meal
and leads with a 3-day free trial. It doesn't describe a free plan. NutriPixel's free plan is not a trial: 3 AI photo scans a day (up to 8 a week), unlimited typed entries and unlimited barcode scans.
Side by side
Cal AI doesn't publish what's included without a subscription, so this table compares the features each app describes, and says so where something isn't stated.

Where Cal AI is better
- iPhone and Apple Health. Cal AI is on iPhone and Android and connects to Apple Health and Google Fit. NutriPixel is Android-only for now.
- A large user base and a well-established app. NutriPixel is new.
Where NutriPixel is different
- A free plan, not just a trial. The free plan has no card and no countdown. Pro comes with a 7-day free trial if you want more. See pricing.
- Calories in and out. NutriPixel adds up resting energy, digestion and activity from Health Connect to show your real balance each day. See the calorie deficit tracker.
- Fasting built in: 12:12 to 20:4 plans, timed from your meals, with window reminders. See intermittent fasting.
- Indian home food, with rotis counted by the piece and dal by the bowl. See the Indian food calorie counter.
- A health rating on packaged food, plus tips on each meal with a one-tap fix. See the barcode scanner.
- Privacy. Meal photos aren't stored by NutriPixel, and there are no ads.
Who should switch, and who shouldn't
NutriPixel is likely a better fit if you want photo calorie tracking without a subscription, you want calories burned and fasting in the same app, or you eat a lot of Indian home food.
Stay with Cal AI if you're on an iPhone, you rely on Apple Health, or you're already subscribed and happy with it.
Switching from Cal AI
Set up NutriPixel with your age, height, weight, activity level and goal and it calculates your targets. NutriPixel can't import Cal AI history, so keep your old account if you want to look back at it.
