What's in it
McDonald's lists the Big Mac as a Big Mac bun with two beef patties, Big Mac sauce, American cheese, shredded lettuce, pickle slices and onions.
Putting the numbers in context
- More than half its calories come from fat: 34 g of fat is about 306 kcal of its 580.
- With medium fries (320 kcal), a Big Mac comes to about 900 kcal before you add a drink.
- Its 1,060 mg of sodium is about 46% of the 2,300 mg Daily Value used on US food labels.
Making a McDonald's Big Mac meal steadier
- Most of the meal's sugar is in the drink. A medium Coca-Cola has 70 g of added sugar (270 kcal), 140% of the 50 g Daily Value, while the Big Mac has 7 g of sugars. Water or a zero-sugar soda takes all of that out.
- Medium fries add 43 g of carbs, almost as much as the Big Mac's 45 g. McDonald's Apple Slices are 4 g.
- McDonald's US menu has no real high-fiber side: Apple Slices list 0 g of fiber per bag, and the Big Mac has 3 g against a 28 g Daily Value. Fiber, especially the thick kind in beans, oats and many vegetables, slows how fast a meal raises blood sugar.1 If you can, have a salad or some vegetables with it.
- Eat any vegetables first. In a small study of adults with type 2 diabetes, eating a meal's vegetables and protein before its carbs led to a lower blood-sugar rise than eating the carbs first.2
- Take a short walk afterwards. In trials, breaking up sitting with short, light walks lowered blood sugar after meals compared with staying seated.3
