What's in it
Chipotle describes the burrito bowl as a burrito without the tortilla: your choice of rice, beans, protein, salsa and toppings in a bowl. It publishes nutrition per ingredient, per standard scoop, so a bowl's total is the sum of what you pick.
Putting the numbers in context
- Guacamole is the biggest single add-on: 230 kcal and 22 g of fat a scoop.
- Double portions count twice: double chicken adds another 180 kcal.
- Chipotle's own range for a bowl is 420 to 910 kcal before extras like chips or a drink.
Making a Chipotle Burrito Bowl meal steadier
- Beans are where the fiber is: 7 g in a scoop of black beans and 8 g in pinto beans, against 1 g in white rice. Fiber slows how fast a meal raises blood sugar,1 and trials that added beans and lentils to people's diets improved blood-sugar control.2
- Rice is most of the bowl's carbs: 40 g of the chicken bowl's 67 g. Brown rice has the same 210 kcal with 2 g of fiber instead of 1. Swapping the rice for supergreens and fajita veggies, like the lighter bowl above, brings the bowl to 34 g of carbs with 11 g of fiber, and half rice lands in between.
- Chips are the hidden carb load: a regular bag is 540 kcal and 73 g of carbs, more than the rice and beans in the bowl together (62 g).
- A 22 fl oz Coca-Cola adds 70 g of sugar. Chipotle's unsweetened iced tea has 0 g.
- Eat the fajita veggies, salsa and chicken before the rice. In a small study of adults with type 2 diabetes, eating a meal's vegetables and protein before its carbs led to a lower blood-sugar rise.3
- Take a short walk afterwards. In trials, breaking up sitting with short, light walks lowered blood sugar after meals compared with staying seated.4
