What is Health Connect?
Health Connect is Android's shared home for health and fitness data. Apps like Google Fit, Samsung Health, Fitbit and many watch and fitness apps can save your steps and workouts there, and other apps you allow can read them. It means NutriPixel can use the activity your other apps already track without you entering it twice.
What NutriPixel reads, and what it doesn't
When you connect, NutriPixel asks Android for permission to read three things:
- Steps, for your daily step count and step goal.
- Active calories burned, for the activity part of your daily burn.
- Exercise sessions, so your workouts show up on your day.
It never writes anything to Health Connect. Steps are the one permission it needs; the other two make the numbers more accurate. You can change or remove access at any time in Android's Health Connect settings.
Your activity data stays on your phone. It isn't synced to NutriPixel's servers or sent to analytics.
What you get when you connect
- Calories eaten vs. burned with measured activity. Your daily burn uses the active calories your devices recorded instead of an estimate. Days with steps but no active-calorie data use an estimate from your steps, height and weight. See how the calorie deficit tracker works it out.
- A step goal. 8,000 steps a day by default, adjustable. You can turn on an evening reminder that tells you how many steps are left.
- Close the gap with a walk. When you've eaten more than you've burned so far today, NutriPixel suggests a brisk walk, in minutes and steps, that would close the gap, or a walk plus a lighter meal when the gap is bigger.
- Optional earn-back. Turn it on and a share of your extra activity, above what your calorie target already assumes, is added to your budget for the day.
- Pro insights. With Pro, you get activity trends and insights worked out on your phone, including predicted vs. actual weight change.
Not using Health Connect?
That's fine. Without it, NutriPixel estimates your activity from the activity level you picked when setting up the app, and still shows calories eaten vs. burned. Once you do connect, it uses only your measured data. It doesn't mix in estimates.
Which phones does it work on?
NutriPixel is an Android app, available on Google Play. Health Connect is built into Android 14 and later, and is available as an app from Google Play on many older Android versions. Apple Health support is planned for the iPhone version.
